Herbst Appliance Therapy

For most people, Orthodontics is about straightening crooked teeth. The truth is, Orthodontics is much more than just straightening teeth.  It is about creating a smile and bite that our patients grow into as they get older.  One of the many facial features that we find attractive and keep us looking younger is a balanced facial profile.  Many of our patients present to us with what most would describe as buck or protruded top teeth.  In reality, they have short or retruded lower jaws which adversely effect their facial profiles.

In other words, their lower jaw is positioned too far back for the properly positioned upper jaw.  This requires an orthopedic or skeletal repositioning of the lower jaw to correct the bite and to establish an esthetically pleasing facial profile.  This can not be accomplished with braces alone.  An additional orthopedic appliance working in conjunction with braces is needed.

The HERBST  appliance was developed by a German Orthodontist, Dr. Emil Herbst, in the early to mid 1900's.  Today, it is the most widely used lower jaw orthopedic corrector in the world and the most popular one in the United States.  We have been offering the Herbst appliance to our patients for more than 15 years.

Just like regular braces, the Herbst appliance will require a period of adjustment by the patient which is generally about 3 - 7 days. It is activated gradually every 8 - 10 weeks and is removed in about 12 months.  Total treatment time including a full set of braces averages about 24 months.
